After graduating in 1948 from the IDHEC (Institute for Advanced Cinematographic Studies), he went to the Ivory Coast to fulfill a commission for the French League of Education, which wanted to show French students “how the villagers of French West Africa live.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUpon his arrival in Abidjan, Vautier decided to film the crimes of French colonialism and the looting of resources with his camera in hand. As the first French anticolonialist film, \u003cem\u003eAfrique 50\u003c\/em\u003e earned him a prison sentence and was censored for over forty years in France.
