A 1948 graduate of the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC), he left for the Ivory Coast to fulfill a commission for the French Teaching League, which wanted to show French students \"how the villagers of French West Africa live.\"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUpon his arrival in Abidjan, Vautier decided to film the crimes of French colonialism and the plundering of resources with a handheld camera. A communist militant, involved in the maquis in Algeria where he produced several documentary works, including To Be Twenty in the Aures, and later a pioneer of engaged, popular, and independent
