The artist and their approach

Joy Hanoun brings light and colour to the celebrated portrait of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the “Lion of Panjshir”. She draws inspiration from a photograph by Reza, the French-Iranian photojournalist who was close to the commander.

Through her artistic interpretation, Joy transforms shadows into colours, lending renewed intensity to his presence. A burst of colour to make this face timeless.

A figure of resistance

THE LION OF PANJSHIR
AHMAD SHAH MASSOUD (1953–2001) – AFGHANISTAN

Ahmad Shah Massoud, born on 2 September 1953 in Afghanistan, was an Afghan military commander and political leader. Known as the “Lion of Panjshir”, he played a crucial role in the struggle against the Soviet occupation and the Taliban.

Beyond his military achievements, Massoud was among the first to alert the international community to the dangers of religious terrorism. A political visionary, he anticipated the rise of Islamist radicalism long before the attacks of 11 September 2001.

His assassination in 2001 deprived the world of a courageous leader. His legacy endures as a symbol of resistance to oppression and a warning about the global threats posed by terrorism.
