THE POET OF NÉGRITUDE

AIMÉ CÉSAIRE (1913-2008) - MARTINIQUE

Born in Basse-Pointe, Martinique, Aimé Césaire was a poet, writer, and politician. A major figure of the Négritude movement, he used poetry as a voice to affirm Black identity and denounce colonial domination. His Notebook of a Return to the Native Land and his Discourse on Colonialism hold a central place in his body of work. Also serving as a deputy and mayor of Fort-de-France, he left a profound mark on Martinican political and cultural life. Upon his death in 2008, he left behind a legacy of thought that continues to fuel reflections on dignity, memory, and emancipation. Through this design by Olivier Bonhomme, United Souls pays tribute to his legacy.
