THE AFRICAN ANTI-COLONIAL STRATEGIST
AMíLCAR CABRAL (1924-1973) GUINEA-BISSAU
An agronomist by training, Amílcar Cabral was a founding member and incorruptible leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC), created in 1956. Mobilizing his people with a revolutionary theory based on cultural resistance, Cabral was invited to the Tricontinental Conference in Havana in January 1966 to share his experience of guerrilla warfare with other liberation movements. An intellectual, diplomat, and military strategist, he was convinced that African unity must be built through struggle. Calling on African elites to renounce their privileges and show solidarity with the people by committing "class suicide," and urging African revolutionaries to be wary of the "cancer of treason," Amílcar Cabral was assassinated on January 20, 1973, in Conakry.
