PIONEER OF AFRICAN WOMEN'S EMANCIPATION
AOUA KEÏTA (1912-1980) - MALI
Born in Bamako in 1912, Aoua Keïta was a midwife, trade unionist, and anti-colonial activist. Through her work and political commitment, she mobilized women and defended their place in public life. A militant of the Sudanese Union – African Democratic Rally (US-RDA), she became the first woman elected as a deputy in her country in 1959. Her journey connects the struggle for independence with the struggle for women's emancipation. In her autobiography Femme d’Afrique (Woman of Africa), published in 1975, she recounts this experience. Having died in Bamako in 1980, she leaves behind a legacy of determination and collective commitment. Through this creation by Afi Kodjobi Tchoukpa, United Souls pays tribute to her memory.
