THE VOICE OF RESISTANCE AND PEACE

MAHMOUD DARWISH (1941-2008) - PALESTINE

A Palestinian writer born in 1941 in Al-Birwa and who passed away in a Houston hospital in 2008, Mahmoud Darwish is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Immensely rich, his life and work embody the history of the Palestinian resistance. Expelled in 1948 to a refugee camp in southern Lebanon, he joined the Communist Party and began publishing poems and articles that would lead to five imprisonments and house arrest. In 1970, he left Palestine. His poetry was enriched through his various exiles (Moscow, Cairo, Beirut, Tunis, Paris). Elected to the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which he left after the Oslo Accords, he returned to live in 1995 between Amman and Ramallah, where he continued his poetic work. With collections such as "Palestine as a Metaphor" (1997) or "The Earth Is Narrow to Us" (2000), Mahmoud Darwish's intimate and engaged poems translate the specific identity issues of Palestinian refugees with a universal dimension.
