A drawing by artist Joy Hanoun

Joy Hanoun has that singular ability to see color where one might perceive shadow. Her creation dedicated to Fela Kuti accompanies United Souls' tribute to the king of Afrobeat and his committed spirit. Color here carries a presence, that of a musician who turned his art into a language of resistance.

On this unisex hoodie, the drawing finds its place in everyday life. With jeans or under a jacket, the softness of organic cotton and recycled polyester is perfect for cool days. Wearing Fela means keeping alive the memory of music inseparable from its convictions.

THE KING OF AFROBEAT

FELA KUTI (1938-1997) - NIGERIA

A Nigerian musician and activist, Fela Kuti turned Afrobeat into a language of resistance. After studying music in London, his meeting with Sandra Izsadore in the United States in 1969 fueled his Pan-Africanist commitment. Blending jazz, soul, and African rhythms, his music denounced corruption, dictatorship, and the power of multinationals. With the Kalakuta Republic, he advocated for an alternative and autonomous living space. Despite persecution, he remained faithful to his conviction: "music is a weapon." Having passed away in 1997, he left behind a body of work whose influence extends far beyond the borders of Nigeria.
