THE ANTICOLONIAL PSYCHIATRIST
FRANTZ FANON (1925-1961) - MARTINIQUE
Born in Martinique, Frantz Fanon was one of the great voices of the anti-colonial struggle. A psychiatrist by training, he directed the Blida hospital in Algeria, where he treated both victims and executioners of the colonial system. A lucid observer of the psychological ravages of imperial domination, he denounced its mechanisms: acculturation, alienation, and the devaluation of identity. A theoretician of de-alienation, he advocated for total emancipation—mental, cultural, and political. An active FLN activist, he put his pen to the service of peoples in struggle, writing major works such as Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth . Fanon died at the age of 36, but his work continues to illuminate contemporary struggles.
