JAMES BALDWIN (1924-1987) - USA

James Baldwin was a writer, author of novels, poetry, short stories, plays, and essays. Facing racism and police brutality in segregationist America, he took refuge in France in 1948. He published his first works before returning to the United States in 1957. Baldwin then became involved in the civil rights movement, speaking at conferences, on television shows, and at rallies to try and raise public awareness. Close to Martin Luther King, he returned to France after his assassination.

Until his death, James Baldwin dedicated himself to writing, attempting to bring understanding to political and social themes that provoke strong emotions. "I Am Not Your Negro," the documentary by Raoul Peck, recounts the exceptional fight of this great activist for the civil rights of Black people and homosexuals in the United States.
