The artist and their approach

The idea of bringing James Baldwin into the United Souls collection took shape after discovering Raoul Peck’s documentary I Am Not Your Negro.

Camille Laforcenée’s artwork is accompanied by the words “I have to make conscious of the things you don't see”, chosen by United Souls. This excerpt echoes Baldwin’s reflection that the role of the artist, like that of the person who shares your life, is to make you aware of what you do not see.

Baldwin upheld this commitment in his struggle against racial segregation in the United States. Through his documentary, Raoul Peck carries this work forward: making visible the realities we sometimes prefer to ignore.

An illustrator, engraver and screen printer, Camille Laforcenée develops an artistic practice attentive to materials, texture and meaning.

A figure of resistance

I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO
JAMES BALDWIN (1924–1987) – UNITED STATES

James Baldwin was a writer whose work spanned novels, poetry, short stories, plays and essays. Facing racism and police violence in segregated America, he sought refuge in France in 1948. He published his first works before returning to the United States in 1957.

Baldwin then became involved in the civil rights movement, speaking at conferences, on television and at rallies to raise public awareness. Close to Martin Luther King Jr., he returned to France after King’s assassination. Until his death, Baldwin devoted himself to writing, seeking to bring understanding to political and social issues that stirred intense emotions.

Raoul Peck’s documentary I Am Not Your Negro traces the extraordinary struggle of this leading advocate for the civil rights of Black and gay people in the United States.
