THE THEORIST OF THE PIONEER OF PAN-AFRICANISM AND AFRICAN INDEPENDENCE
KWAME NKRUMAH 1909-1972 GHANA
Kwame Nkrumah, the iconic leader of Ghana's struggle for independence and a pan-African visionary, left his mark on African and world history. As Ghana's first president, he was a tireless advocate of African unity, convinced that only a united and sovereign Africa could free itself from the clutches of colonialism and neocolonialism. Nkrumah led Ghana to independence in 1957, becoming a role model for the continent. Founder of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, he believed that Africa's destiny must be built on political and economic unity. Overthrown in a coup in 1966, his pan-African dream continues to inspire contemporary struggles for liberation and justice.
