A PIONEER OF PAN-AFRICANISM AND AFRICAN INDEPENDENCE

KWAME NKRUMAH (1909-1972) - GHANA

Leader of the struggle for Ghana’s independence, achieved in 1957, Kwame Nkrumah became the country's first president. A defender of Pan-Africanism, he championed the idea of a united and sovereign Africa, capable of building its own political and economic future. He participated in the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963 and denounced neocolonialism. Toppled in 1966, he left behind a legacy of thought that continues to fuel debates on the emancipation and unity of the continent.
