MARIELLE FRANCO (1979-2018) - BRAZIL
Marielle Franco was a politician assassinated on March 14, 2018, in Rio de Janeiro. Born in a favela, she studied sociology and public administration. Within civil society and later the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), this lesbian activist campaigned against racism and police violence targeting women and Black minorities. In 2016, she was elected as a city councilor in Rio with the fifth-highest number of votes and the most votes for a woman in that position. A rising figure in Brazilian politics, committed to fighting corruption, Marielle Franco chaired the Commission for Women's Rights, making her a target for criminal organizations and the far-right. Following her assassination, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated their indignation around the world.
