A drawing by artist Marie-Claire Laffaire

Shades of sand and blue, a life that overflows with words. In Maya Angelou Blue, Marie-Claire Laffaire gives a new presence to her realistic portrait. Color accompanies the gaze, the clothing patterns, and the botanical background. In very small print, the artist lists Maya Angelou’s occupations, activities, and commitments: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, kitchen helper, maid, prostitute, madam, music shop clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. The portrait invites you to read as much as it does to look, to discover a phenomenal woman with multiple lives.

This unisex Maya Angelou Blue hoodie brings this creation into everyday life. With jeans or under an open jacket, it leaves the work visible and extends the tribute to a voice that made literature a space for memory and emancipation. At United Souls, style has meaning.

THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS FIGHTER

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, filmmaker, and teacher. A victim of violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her find the strength to speak again. A central figure of African American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Engaged in the civil rights movement, she made a strong, singular, and literary voice heard, documenting the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first volume of her memoirs, was written on the advice of James Baldwin. Maya Angelou’s work is emblematic of a struggle that must continue for equality, justice, and respect.
