Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director and teacher. Having experienced violence and trauma during childhood, she found in literature the strength to speak again. A central figure in African American cultural life, she also spent time in Ghana, where she welcomed Malcolm X.

Committed to the civil rights movement, she brought a powerful, distinctive literary voice to the experience of being a Black woman in segregated America through seven autobiographical books and her poetry. The bestselling I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, is the first volume of her memoirs, written with the encouragement of James Baldwin.

Taught in schools, Maya Angelou’s work embodies the continuing struggle for equality, justice and respect.
