Soft shades, a presence that doesn’t fade away. In Maya Angelou Blue, Marie-Claire Laffaire combines sand and blue tones with the precision of a realistic portrait. On the light-colored background of the sweatshirt, the face, the patterns of the clothing, and the floral decor form a nuanced whole. In very small print, the words inscribed within the artwork recount the many lives of Maya Angelou: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, kitchen helper, maid, prostitute, pimp, record store clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. A tribute to a phenomenal woman, meant to be looked at as much as read.

The relaxed fit of this unisex artist sweatshirt allows it to be worn over a t-shirt, with jeans, or under an open jacket. Its 281.42 g/m² fabric blends 85% organic cotton with 15% recycled polyester. On the light shades, the sand and blue palette complements the outfit without overshadowing the presence of the portrait. A piece to bring art into your daily life and wear your convictions. At United Souls, style has meaning.

THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS FIGHTER
MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and teacher. Having suffered violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her regain the strength to speak. A central figure in Afro-American cultural life, she also spent time in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she made her strong, singular, and literary voice heard to recount the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. The bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the guidance of James Baldwin. Part of the school curriculum, Maya Angelou’s work is emblematic of an ongoing fight for equality, justice, and respect.
