A luminous presence on a dark canvas. In this variation of Maya Angelou Blue, the sandy tones of the face and botanical background stand out from the dark backdrop, while blue hues complement the details of the portrait. Marie-Claire Laffaire combines her realistic drawing with tiny inscriptions that recount the multiple lives of Maya Angelou: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, kitchen assistant, maid, prostitute, madam, music shop clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. The gaze captures you, the words invite you closer: a phenomenal woman cannot be summed up by a single story.

The dark fabric gives the portrait a different presence than the version on a light background; Maya Angelou’s name is visible in clear lettering beneath the drawing. With its relaxed fit and 281.42 g/m² fabric blending 85% organic cotton with 15% recycled polyester, this unisex artist sweatshirt can be worn over a t-shirt or with jeans. A piece that puts the artwork center stage and turns your outfit into a shared tribute. At United Souls, style has meaning: the art of wearing your convictions.

THE POET FIGHTER FOR CIVIL RIGHTS
MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and educator. A victim of violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her regain the strength to speak. A central figure in African-American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she lent a powerful, unique, and literary voice to describe the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. The 1970 bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the guidance of James Baldwin. Included in school curricula, Maya Angelou’s work is emblematic of an ongoing struggle for equality, justice, and respect.
