On a dark canvas, one face and a thousand lives. In Maya Angelou Blue, Marie-Claire Laffaire composes a realistic portrait where the sandy tones of the face and the plant background stand out against the dark base. Blue hues accompany the patterns and details of the design. In tiny letters, the artist lists the professions, activities, and commitments of Maya Angelou: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, cook, maid, sex worker, madam, music store clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. A phenomenal woman whose journey reveals itself beyond the first glance.

The dark fabric gives the portrait a presence different from its version on a light background, with the name Maya Angelou in light lettering below the design. This women's artist t-shirt combines a straight fit with a 100% organic, ring-spun, combed cotton fabric of 180 g/m². With jeans, a skirt, or under an open jacket, the artwork becomes the highlight of the outfit: a memory to share and a way to wear your convictions. At United Souls, style has meaning.

THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS FIGHTER

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and teacher. A victim of violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her regain the strength to speak. A key figure in African American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she made her voice heard—strong, unique, and literary—to account for the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. The bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the advice of James Baldwin. Included in school curricula, Maya Angelou's work is emblematic of a fight that must continue for equality, justice, and respect.
