Against a dark background, an assertive presence. With Maya Angelou Blue, Marie-Claire Laffaire creates a dialogue between sand and blue hues and the depth of the garment. The realistic portrait catches the eye, then invites you to discover the words inscribed in tiny characters: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, fry cook, maid, prostitute, madam, record store clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. So many lives and commitments united in the face of a phenomenal woman.

On this dark base, the face and the plant-based decor in sand tones stand out from the fabric, giving the portrait a different presence than its version on a light background. This unisex artist t-shirt combines a regular fit with 100% organic cotton fabric of 180 g/m². With jeans or under an open jacket, it leaves the artwork in the foreground and turns an everyday outfit into a tribute: the art of wearing your convictions. At United Souls, style has meaning.

THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS FIGHTER

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and teacher. A victim of violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her regain the strength to speak. A central figure in African American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she welcomed Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she made her strong, unique, and literary voice heard to recount the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. The bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the advice of James Baldwin. Part of the school curriculum, Maya Angelou's work is emblematic of an ongoing fight for equality, justice, and respect.
