Seen from the back, a work of art speaks. On this faded worker jacket, Marie-Claire Laffaire's Maya Angelou Blue portrait is revealed on the back in shades of sand and blue. The realistic gaze and plant-based setting draw the eye; tiny inscriptions invite you to discover the multiple lives of a phenomenal woman: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, cook, housekeeper, prostitute, pimp, music store clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. A portrait that tells a story as much as it depicts one.

DTF-printed on the back, the artwork gives another dimension to this artist jacket made of faded organic cotton. Against the khaki of the visual, the sand tones of the face and leaves stand out from the fabric, while blue accents punctuate the details of the drawing. Its tailored fit and 340 g/m² fabric make it a piece to pair with a t-shirt and jeans, allowing the portrait to be discovered as you move. Wearing a work of art, passing on a memory, affirming one's convictions: at United Souls, style has meaning.

THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS FIGHTER

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, filmmaker, and educator. A victim of violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her find the strength to speak again. A key figure in African-American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she made her strong, singular, and literary voice heard to recount the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. The 1970 bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the guidance of James Baldwin. Included in school curricula, Maya Angelou's work is emblematic of an ongoing fight for equality, justice, and respect.
