A drawing by artist Marie-Claire Laffaire

One face, a thousand lives, a phenomenal woman. In this black and white pencil portrait, Marie-Claire Laffaire captures the presence of Maya Angelou with realism and delicacy. In tiny lettering, she inscribes the professions, activities, and commitments that have marked her journey: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, kitchen helper, maid, prostitute, madam, music shop clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. Look closely, and the drawing becomes a narrative: that of a woman with multiple lives, whose strength is not confined to a single definition.

This unisex Maya Angelou Nature hoodie extends this tribute into everyday life, worn with jeans or under an open jacket. As you go about your day, the portrait pays homage to the freedom to become, to speak out, and to stand by one's convictions. At United Souls, style has meaning.

THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS FIGHTER

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, filmmaker, and teacher. A survivor of childhood violence and trauma, literature helped her regain the strength to speak. A central figure in African American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Engaged in the civil rights movement, she used her strong, singular, and literary voice to document the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first volume of her memoirs, was written with the advice of James Baldwin. Maya Angelou's work is emblematic of an ongoing struggle for equality, justice, and respect.
