Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and educator. A survivor of violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her find the strength to speak again. A quintessential figure of African American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she made her voice heard—strong, unique, and literary—to bear witness to the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. Her 1970 bestseller, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the guidance of James Baldwin. A staple of school curricula, Maya Angelou's work is emblematic of an ongoing fight for equality, justice, and respect.
