One face, a thousand lives, a phenomenal woman. In this black and white pencil portrait, Marie-Claire Laffaire captures the presence of Maya Angelou with realism and delicacy. In tiny print, she inscribes the professions, activities, and commitments that have marked her journey: writer, poet, actress, streetcar conductor, dancer, singer, kitchen helper, maid, prostitute, madam, music shop clerk, journalist, administrative assistant, university professor, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. Look closely, and the drawing becomes a narrative: that of a woman with many lives, whose strength cannot be contained by a single definition.

With its straight cut and 180 g/m² 100% combed and ring-spun organic cotton fabric, this artist-designed women’s t-shirt is perfect for everyday wear, whether styled with jeans or worn under a jacket. The portrait pays tribute to the freedom to become, to speak out, and to stand by one's convictions. At United Souls, style has meaning.

THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS FIGHTER

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, filmmaker, and educator. A victim of childhood violence and trauma, literature helped her find the strength to speak. A central figure in African American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she made her voice heard—strong, singular, and literary—to document the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and her poetry. The bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the guidance of James Baldwin. Included in school curricula, Maya Angelou’s work is emblematic of an ongoing fight for equality, justice, and respect.
