THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and educator. A survivor of childhood violence and trauma, literature helped her find the strength to speak again. A central figure in African American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she welcomed Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she lent a powerful, unique, and literary voice to document the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographies and her poetry. Her 1970 bestseller, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was the first volume of her memoirs, written on the advice of James Baldwin. A staple of school curricula, Maya Angelou’s work is emblematic of an ongoing struggle for equality, justice, and respect.
