THE POET AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST

MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES

Maya Angelou was an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and educator. A survivor of childhood trauma and violence, she found the strength to speak again through literature. A major figure in African-American cultural life, she also lived in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Committed to the civil rights movement, she used her strong, unique, and literary voice to document the life of a Black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and her poetry. The 1970 bestseller, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was the first volume of her memoirs, written with the encouragement of James Baldwin. A staple of school curricula, Maya Angelou’s work is emblematic of the ongoing fight for equality, justice, and respect.
