A drawing by the artist Marie-Claire Laffaire

A radiant smile, an intact strength. For this portrait of Nina Simone, Marie-Claire Laffaire chose a smiling photograph, a counterpoint to the singer's often serious and intense depictions. She immortalizes a luminous joy that neither erases Nina's struggles nor her determination. Another facet of the activist diva, to remind us that a figure of resistance cannot be summed up solely by the gravity of her commitment.

This unisex Nina Simone hoodie brings this artist's choice into everyday life. With jeans or under a jacket, it serves as a tribute to the singer, pianist, and icon of the civil rights movement: a face, a smile, and a struggle that carry meaning.

THE ACTIVIST DIVA

NINA SIMONE (1933-2003) - UNITED STATES

Nina Simone was a pianist, singer, composer, and activist. A performer of "Mississippi Goddam" and several other tracks that became classics of the civil rights movement, she championed a more radical stance, closer to Malcolm X, never hesitating to shock and denounce white supremacy with a legendary frankness. Even regarding music, she famously stated, "Jazz is a white term to define Black people. My music is Black classical music," said the woman who dreamed of becoming the first Black classical pianist. From America to Europe and Africa, her life was marked by numerous hardships. She eventually settled in the south of France, where she continued to record albums and perform on stage. Her powerful and magnificent musical repertoire, along with her presence, worthy of an African queen, continue to inspire us today.
