NINA SIMONE (1933-2003) - UNITED STATES

Nina Simone was a pianist, singer, songwriter, and activist. A performer of "Mississippi Goddam" and several other tracks that became classics of the civil rights movement, she advocated for a more radical approach, close to Malcolm X, never hesitating to shock and denounce white supremacy with a legendary bluntness. Even regarding music, "Jazz is a white term to define black people. My music is black classical music," asserted the woman who dreamed of becoming the first black classical pianist. From America to Europe and Africa, her life was marked by numerous setbacks. She eventually settled in the South of France, where she continued to record albums and perform on stage. Her powerful and magnificent musical repertoire, and her presence worthy of an African queen, continue to inspire us today.
