KWAME NKRUMAH 1909-1972 GHANA

Kwame Nkrumah, an iconic leader in the struggle for Ghana's independence and a Pan-African visionary, left his mark on the history of Africa and the world. As the first president of Ghana, he was a tireless advocate for African unity, convinced that only a united and sovereign Africa could emancipate itself from the clutches of colonialism and neocolonialism. Nkrumah led Ghana to independence in 1957, becoming a role model for the continent. As a founder of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, he believed that Africa's destiny had to be built through political and economic unity. Overthrown in a coup in 1966, his Pan-African dream continues to inspire contemporary struggles for liberation and justice.
