THE VOICE OF UNITY AND ARAB IDENTITY
UMM KULTHUM (1902 approximate date-1975) - EGYPT
Umm Kulthum, nicknamed the "Star of the Orient," the "Diva," the "Singer of the People," the "Nightingale of the Nile," and even the "Fourth Pyramid," is one of the greatest singers in the Arab world. Beginning her career in 1922, she recorded several hundred songs accompanied by a traditional orchestra that continued to expand. Through her art, she was able to unite Arabs beyond their divisions and is, as such, considered the voice of Arab identity and unity. Involved in the development of Egyptian society and the Arab nation, Umm Kulthum sang of the revolution and the evacuation of English forces from Egyptian territory, and with the rise of Nasser, she became the embodiment of pan-Arabism. Her song Wallah Zaman Ya Silahi became the national anthem of the United Arab Republic in 1960.
