THE FIGHT FILMMAKER

René Vautier (1928-2015) - France

A Breton director and filmmaker born in 1928 to a worker father and a teacher mother, René Vautier joined the Resistance at the age of fifteen and received several decorations for his commitment. A 1948 graduate of the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC), he left for the Ivory Coast to complete a commission from the French League of Education, which wanted to show French students "how villagers in French West Africa live."

Upon his arrival in Abidjan, Vautier decided to film, with a handheld camera, the crimes of French colonialism and the plundering of resources. His first French anti-colonialist film, Afrique 50, earned him a prison sentence and was censored for over forty years in France. A communist activist, involved in the resistance in Algeria where he produced several documentaries, including Avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès, then a pioneer of committed, popular, and independent cinema, René Vautier remained a militant filmmaker until his death in 2015.
