A drawing by the artist Jay One

A portrait traversed by the movement of history. Jay Ramier, alias Jay One, a pioneer of Parisian street art, depicts René Vautier with stripes in the background that give the drawing its rhythm and movement. They echo the filmmaker’s place in the history of French colonialism: that of a man who films to show what others would like to leave off-camera.

This drawing pays tribute to an engaged cinema, confronted with censorship, which makes the image a means of bearing witness and challenging dominant narratives. Wearing René Vautier means keeping this perspective alive and remembering that telling history can also be an act of resistance.

This unisex René Vautier hoodie combines Jay One's creation with a blend of organic cotton and recycled polyester. Its relaxed fit complements your everyday outfits, whether with jeans or under an open jacket, allowing the portrait and its stripes to convey the memory of a combat filmmaker.

Hoodie features

• 85% ring-spun combed organic cotton, 15% recycled polyester
• Relaxed fit

THE COMBAT FILMMAKER

RENÉ VAUTIER (1928-2015) - FRANCE

A Breton director and filmmaker born in 1928 to a working-class father and a teacher mother, René Vautier joined the Resistance at fifteen. After graduating from the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in 1948, he left for West Africa on a commission for the French League of Education.

He chose to film the violence of French colonialism and the plundering of resources. His film Afrique 50, considered the first French anticolonialist film, earned him a conviction and remained censored for a long time. Committed to the struggle for Algerian independence, he pursued a popular and independent style of cinema. With Avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès, he also examined the violence of the Algerian War. Until his death in 2015, René Vautier used the camera as a tool for testimony and resistance. United Souls pays tribute to his journey through Jay One’s drawing.
