THE COMBAT FILMMAKER

RENÉ VAUTIER (1928-2015) - France

A Breton director and filmmaker born in 1928 to a worker father and a teacher mother, René Vautier joined the Resistance at the age of fifteen and received several decorations for his service. After graduating from the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in 1948, he traveled to the Ivory Coast to fulfill a commission from the French League of Education, which wanted to show French students "how the villagers of French West Africa live."

Upon arriving in Abidjan, Vautier decided to film the crimes of French colonialism and the plundering of resources, camera in hand. As the first French anti-colonialist film, *Afrique 50* earned him a prison sentence and was censored for more than forty years in France. A communist militant, involved in the maquis in Algeria—where he produced several documentary works including *Avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès*—and later a pioneer of engaged, popular, and independent cinema, René Vautier remained a combat filmmaker until his death in 2015.
