An essential piece for a look that resists. Jay Ramier, alias Jay One, a pioneer of Parisian street art, pays tribute to René Vautier in a drawing whose movement is born from the stripes in the background. Their rhythm traverses the portrait and echoes the filmmaker’s role in the history of French colonialism: filming to show what one would prefer to leave off-screen.

This drawing celebrates committed cinema, confronted by censorship, which uses the image to bear witness and contest dominant narratives. It reminds us that telling history can also be an act of resistance.

This essential unisex 100% cotton René Vautier artist t-shirt complements your everyday outfits with its classic fit. Worn with jeans or under a jacket, it gives prominence to Jay One's design and the memory of a militant filmmaker.

THE MILITANT FILMMAKER

René Vautier (1928-2015) - France

A Breton director and filmmaker born in 1928 to a working-class father and a schoolteacher mother, René Vautier joined the Resistance at fifteen and received several decorations for his commitment. A 1948 graduate of the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC), he left for the Ivory Coast to fulfill a commission for the French Teaching League, which wanted to show French students "how the villagers of French West Africa live."

Upon his arrival in Abidjan, Vautier decided to film the crimes of French colonialism and the plundering of resources with a handheld camera. The first French anti-colonialist film, Afrique 50 earned him a prison sentence and was censored for over forty years in France. A communist militant, involved in the maquis in Algeria where he produced several documentary works, including To Be Twenty in the Aures, and later a pioneer of engaged, popular, and independent cinema, René Vautier remained a militant filmmaker until his death in 2015.
