A portrait shaped by the movement of history. Jay Ramier, alias Jay One, a pioneer of Parisian street art, depicts René Vautier against a background of stripes that lend the design its rhythm and movement. They echo the filmmaker’s place in the history of French colonialism: a man who films to reveal what others would prefer to leave off-screen.
This design pays tribute to a committed cinema, faced with censorship, which uses imagery as a means to bear witness and challenge dominant narratives. Wearing René Vautier means keeping this perspective alive and remembering that telling history can also be an act of resistance.
This unisex René Vautier artist t-shirt in organic cotton complements your daily outfits with its classic fit. Worn with jeans or under an open jacket, it allows the portrait and its stripes to convey the memory of a militant filmmaker.

THE MILITANT FILMMAKER
RENÉ VAUTIER (1928-2015) - FRANCE
A Breton director and filmmaker born in 1928 to a working-class father and a schoolteacher mother, René Vautier joined the Resistance at fifteen and received several decorations for his commitment. Graduating in 1948 from the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC), he went to the Ivory Coast to fulfill a commission from the French League of Education, which wanted to show French students "how villagers in French West Africa live."
Upon arriving in Abidjan, Vautier decided to film the crimes of French colonialism and the looting of resources with his camera in hand. As the first French anti-colonialist film, *Afrique 50* earned him a prison sentence and was censored for over forty years in France. A communist militant involved in the maquis in Algeria, where he produced several documentary works including *Avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès*, and later a pioneer of a committed, popular, and independent cinema, René Vautier remained a militant filmmaker until his death in 2015.
