SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR (1908-1986) - FRANCE

A major figure of the 20th century, Simone de Beauvoir was a committed intellectual, author, philosopher, and pioneer of modern feminism. In 1949, she shook up the established order with The Second Sex, a founding work in which she dismantled the mechanisms of patriarchal domination and asserted: "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." Through this radical analysis of the female condition, she echoes all forms of oppression – gender, class, or race. In 1954, she received the Prix Goncourt for The Mandarins, but her fight never stopped at literature. Free, solidary, and unyielding, she inspires entire generations to think about equality, to question norms, and to build a fairer world. Her legacy, still alive, illuminates the struggles of yesterday just as it does those of today.
