THE AFRO-BRAZILIAN QUEER STRUGGLE ICON
MARIELLE FRANCO (1979-2018) - BRAZIL
Marielle Franco was a politician assassinated on March 14, 2018, in Rio de Janeiro. Born in a favela, she studied sociology and public administration. Within civil society and later the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), this lesbian activist campaigned against racism and police violence targeting women and Black minorities. In 2016, she was elected city councilor in Rio with the fifth-highest vote count and the highest number of votes for a woman for that position. A rising figure in Brazilian politics, committed to fighting corruption, Marielle Franco chaired the Commission for Women's Rights, becoming a target for criminal and far-right organizations. In the aftermath of her assassination, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated their outrage around the world.
