True to her artistic approach, Joy Hanoun plays with colours where one would expect shadows. She depicts Amílcar Cabral in profile, wearing his iconic cap, known in West Africa as the “Cabral cap”.

Joy adds Cabral’s hand to the drawing, with his index finger raised. In this artwork, the gesture evokes a conviction: humanity must be one and indivisible.

AMÍLCAR CABRAL (1924–1973) – GUINEA-BISSAU

An agronomist by training, Amílcar Cabral was a founding member and incorruptible leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), established in 1956. Mobilising his people through a revolutionary theory rooted in cultural resistance, Cabral was invited to the Tricontinental Conference in Havana in January 1966 to share his experience of guerrilla warfare with other liberation movements.

An intellectual, diplomat and military strategist, he believed that African unity had to be forged through struggle. He called on African elites to relinquish their privileges and stand in solidarity with the people by committing “class suicide”, while urging African revolutionaries to beware of the “cancer of betrayal”. Amílcar Cabral was assassinated on 20 January 1973 in Conakry.
