Marie-Claire Laffaire creates a pared-back drawing centred on Frantz Fanon’s powerful gaze. Her keen sense of perspective shapes an artwork conceived as a “Fanon mask”, a reference to Black Skin, White Masks.

This artwork was created at the request of director Jean-Claude Barny while he was writing his film Fanon. Even before the film was made and released, he wanted to prepare audiences to encounter this figure and his ideas. This approach supported his ambition to make a film for a broad audience.

Bringing together art, cinema and the passing on of knowledge, this United Souls creation invites viewers to discover the history and ideas behind the face.

THE ANTICOLONIAL PSYCHIATRIST
FRANTZ FANON (1925–1961) – MARTINIQUE

Born in Martinique, Frantz Fanon was one of the leading voices of the anticolonial struggle. A trained psychiatrist, he headed Blida Hospital in Algeria, where he treated both victims and perpetrators of the colonial system. A clear-eyed observer of the psychological devastation caused by imperial domination, he exposed its mechanisms: acculturation, alienation and the devaluation of identity.

As a theorist of disalienation, he advocated complete emancipation: mental, cultural and political. An active member of the National Liberation Front (FLN), he placed his writing at the service of peoples fighting for liberation, producing landmark works such as Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth. Fanon died at the age of 36, but his work continues to illuminate contemporary struggles.
