Gil Scott-Heron was an iconic American artist, poet, musician and writer, regarded as one of the most influential voices in urban poetry and the political movements of the 1970s. Born on 1 April 1949 in Chicago, Scott-Heron became known for his incisive lyrics, distinctive soulful voice and unique blend of jazz, soul, funk and spoken word.

His political commitment and social criticism found expression in landmark songs such as “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” and “Winter in America”, which inspired countless artists and activists. His powerful, poetic writing addresses racial injustice, civil rights, drugs, poverty and the human condition.

Gil Scott-Heron also left his mark on music history as a precursor of hip-hop, through his spoken-word style and innovative use of music and urban rhythms.
