KWAME NKRUMAH (1909–1972) – GHANA

Kwame Nkrumah, an iconic leader of Ghana’s independence struggle and a Pan-African visionary, left his mark on the history of Africa and the world. Ghana’s first president, he was a tireless advocate of African unity, convinced that only a united and sovereign Africa could free itself from the grip of colonialism and neocolonialism.

Nkrumah led Ghana to independence in 1957, setting an example for the continent. A founder of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, he believed that Africa’s future had to be built on political and economic unity.

Overthrown in a coup in 1966, his Pan-African dream continues to inspire contemporary struggles for liberation and justice.
