Moved by Marielle Franco’s story, watercolour artist Amandine Szczepaniak replaces her Afro hairstyle with five flowers from Brazil. Each colour carries meaning: blue for life and youth, pink for sexuality, purple for spirit, red for passion and orange for pride.

In this artwork, the flowers symbolically restore what racism and imperialist domination stole from her and from the Brazilian people.

The portrait thus keeps her presence alive: sustaining hope, letting life shine and making art a promise of eternity.

MARIELLE FRANCO (1979–2018) – BRAZIL

Marielle Franco was a politician assassinated on 14 March 2018 in Rio de Janeiro. Born in a favela, she studied sociology and public administration. Through civil society organisations and later the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), this lesbian activist fought racism and police violence targeting women and Black minorities.

In 2016, she was elected to Rio’s city council with the fifth-highest vote total overall and the highest of any woman elected to the council. A rising figure in Brazilian politics and an outspoken opponent of corruption, Marielle Franco chaired the Commission for Women’s Rights, becoming a target for criminal and far-right organisations.

In the wake of her assassination, hundreds of thousands of people around the world demonstrated their outrage.
