THE VOICE OF ARAB UNITY AND IDENTITY
OUM KALTHOUM (1902–1975) – EGYPT

Oum Kalthoum, known as the “Star of the East”, “the Diva”, the “Singer of the People”, the “Nightingale of the Nile” and the “Fourth Pyramid”, was one of the greatest singers in the Arab world. Beginning her career in 1922, she recorded several hundred songs accompanied by an ever-expanding traditional orchestra.

Through her art, she brought Arab people together across their divisions, earning recognition as the voice of Arab identity and unity. Engaged in the transformation of Egyptian society and the Arab nation, Oum Kalthoum sang of revolution and the withdrawal of British forces from Egyptian territory. With Nasser’s rise to power, she became an embodiment of Pan-Arabism.

In 1960, her song Wallah Zaman Ya Silahi became the national anthem of the United Arab Republic.
