THE MOTHER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
ROSA PARKS (1913–2005) – UNITED STATES

Born in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama, Rosa Parks was an African American seamstress. Alongside her husband, she campaigned for Black voter registration. After experiencing a racist incident on a bus, she joined her local branch of the NAACP, the civil rights organisation. Elected secretary, she documented racist incidents and campaigned notably for justice in the 1944 gang rape case of Recy Taylor.

Eleven years later, on 1 December 1955, her arrest for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus sparked a 381-day boycott of the city’s public transport.

Her stand set in motion Martin Luther King Jr.’s first successful mass campaign. Rosa Parks continued her activism in Detroit, where she died on 24 October 2005.
