The artist and their approach

With this portrait by Marie-Claire Laffaire, United Souls brings Simone de Beauvoir into a collection in which struggles for equality resonate with one another.

This choice stems from an interpretation of her thought: the mechanisms used to justify treating women as inferior echo those that legitimise hierarchies of race, caste or class. For United Souls, these forms of domination reveal the same refusal to recognise others as equals.

In a history written by victors and those in power, the struggle for the emancipation of the African continent and the struggle for women’s equal rights converge. Making room for Simone de Beauvoir means affirming this connection and bringing this awareness of others into public spaces.

A figure of resistance

THE THEORIST OF FEMINISM
SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR (1908–1986) – FRANCE

A major figure of the twentieth century, Simone de Beauvoir was a committed intellectual, writer, philosopher and pioneer of modern feminism. In 1949, she challenged the established order with The Second Sex, a foundational work in which she exposed the mechanisms of patriarchal domination and declared: “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”

Through this radical analysis of women’s condition, her work resonates with struggles against all forms of oppression, whether based on gender, class or race. In 1954, she received the Prix Goncourt for The Mandarins, but her struggle never stopped at literature.

Free-spirited, steadfast and committed to solidarity, she inspired generations to think deeply about equality, question social norms and build a fairer world. Her enduring legacy illuminates the struggles of the past as well as those of today.
