A face etched into bark, a vision faithfully rendered. Afi Kodjobi Tchoukpa pays tribute to Wangari Maathai through a drawing that evokes her portrait carved into tree bark: her image symbolically merges with the very material she devoted her life to protecting.

Moved by Wangari’s wish that no further tree be felled to make her coffin, the artist conveys this faithfulness to her convictions through her drawing. Bark becomes the language of this tribute, a connection between Wangari and the trees she defended.

THE AFRO-FEMINIST AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST
WANGARI MUTA MAATHAI (1940–2011) – KENYA

Wangari Muta Maathai, a Kenyan Afro-feminist and environmental activist, embodied the connection between social justice and the protection of nature. Known as Mama Miti (“Mother of Trees”), she founded the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, which enabled millions of trees to be planted to combat deforestation, empower communities and promote peace.

A pioneer of environmental awareness in Africa, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, in recognition of her commitment to the environment, equality and human dignity.

Her legacy remains a call to action, reminding us that environmental protection and emancipation go hand in hand in building a sustainable, peaceful and equitable future.
