A drawing by artist Joy Hanoun

The captain in motion, advice as a language. Joy Hanoun draws Thomas Sankara full-length, based on a photograph where he is walking in military attire alongside Blaise Compaoré. The artist chooses to keep only Sankara: his silhouette, his movement, and his presence.

But she also transforms his uniform. After discovering in a documentary aired on ARTE how the patterns of certain wax prints can express a message in the public sphere, Joy was particularly struck by a pattern named "Advisor." In the story she discovered, wearing this fabric signifies adopting a posture of counsel, maturity, and a role as someone one can rely on.

She then substitutes this pattern for Sankara’s military camouflage. A choice that shifts the gaze: the captain retains his gait, but his clothing now speaks of responsibility and transmission. For Joy, this language is the one that suits him best.

This unisex Thomas Sankara hoodie combines this design with a blend of organic cotton and recycled polyester. Its side pockets and regular fit make it a piece for everyday wear, with jeans or under an open jacket. It is also a way to wear the history that the drawing conveys.

THE MAN OF INTEGRITY

THOMAS SANKARA (1949-1987) - BURKINA FASO

Thomas Sankara carried a vision of emancipation based on autonomy, social justice, and the fight against corruption. As head of Burkina Faso, he initiated reforms in education and agriculture, advocated for economic self-sufficiency, and made the emancipation of women a key issue in his political project.

His term ended with the 1987 coup d'état, during which he was assassinated. His thoughts and commitment continue to fuel debates on African sovereignty, equality, and political responsibility. Through Joy Hanoun’s drawing, United Souls pays tribute to the man known as "the man of integrity."
