The captain in everyday life, a uniform that tells a different story. Joy Hanoun draws a full-length portrait of Thomas Sankara from a photograph where he walks in military attire alongside Blaise Compaoré. The artist chooses to keep only Sankara: his silhouette, his movement, and his presence.

But she also transforms his uniform. After discovering, in a documentary broadcast on ARTE, how the patterns of certain loincloths can express a message in the public sphere, Joy is particularly struck by a pattern named "Advisor." In the story she discovers, wearing this fabric amounts to asserting a posture of counsel, of maturity, a position as someone one can rely on.

She then substitutes this pattern for Sankara’s military camouflage. A choice that shifts the gaze: the captain retains his bearing, but his clothing now speaks of responsibility and transmission. For Joy, this language is the one that suits her best.

Through these concrete actions, he demonstrated his bold vision for an autonomous and prosperous Burkina Faso.

As a charismatic leader, Sankara breathed new life into African politics, inspiring future generations. His legacy transcends the borders of Burkina Faso, embodying a struggle for freedom, equality, and social justice. Unfortunately, his visionary mandate was cut short by a coup d'état in 1987, leaving behind a complex, yet undeniably powerful legacy. Thomas Sankara thus remains an iconic figure of African leadership, having revolutionized the way Africa conceived its future.
