MARIELLE FRANCO (1979-2018) - BRAZIL
Marielle Franco is a politician assassinated on March 14, 2018, in Rio de Janeiro. Born in a favela, she studied sociology and public administration. Within civil society and then the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), this lesbian activist advocated against racism and police violence targeting women and Black minorities. She was elected city councilor in Rio in 2016 with the fifth-highest vote and the highest number of votes for a woman in this position. A rising figure in Brazilian politics, committed to fighting corruption, Marielle Franco chairs the Commission for Women's Rights, becoming a target for criminal and far-right organizations. In the aftermath of her assassination, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated their outrage around the world.
