This drawing of Cheikh Anta Diop is a creation by Olivier Bonhomme, an illustrator and art director based in Montpellier.

His surrealist world blends pop iconography with symbolism. Clear lines and a playful use of colour run through his work, from illustration to murals and digital creations.

As a graphic nod, the Egyptian pyramids punctuate the revolutionary historian’s name, echoing the place of ancient Egypt in his research into African history.

HE REVOLUTIONARY HISTORIAN CHEIKH ANTA DIOP (1923–1986) – SENEGAL

Cheikh Anta Diop was a historian, anthropologist, Egyptologist and politician. While studying at the Sorbonne, he argued in Nations nègres et culture (1954) for the African origins of Egyptian civilisation and the long-standing contribution of Africa to world civilisation. His work emphasised the importance of Africans conducting their own historical and scientific research to challenge racist theories.

Returning to Senegal in 1960, he was denied a teaching position at the university that now bears his name. A committed Pan-Africanist, he became an incorruptible political opponent of President Léopold Sédar Senghor, who briefly imprisoned him.

Until his death, Cheikh Anta Diop produced significant research on the cultural unity of Africa and delivered numerous lectures calling for Africa to become its own centre of knowledge production.
